Death toll from south China road collapse rises to 48

China: The death toll from a bridge collapse in southwestern China’s Guangdong province has risen to 48, position press said on Thursday ( May 2 ), as recovery work continued.

According to state news agency Xinhua, heavy rains on Wednesday caused a section of the road running from Meizhou area to Dabu state to bunker in at around 2.10am.

Vehicles veered into the roughly 18-meter-long gash in the runway and plummeted down the steep hill below.

Guangdong, a densely populated business powerhouse, has been hit by a series of tragedies attributed to extreme weather events in recent months.

This time of year, the winds were much heavier than expected, and they have been linked to weather change.

The bridge collapse trapped over 20 vehicles and included 54 folks, according to Xinhua.

China has pledged to reduce emissions to net zero by 2060, but it is the biggest emission of greenhouse gases.

” ALL- OUT” Work

” Writers understand from a press conference held by the town of Meizhou, Guangdong, that the bridge collapse crisis… has led to the deaths of 48 people”, Xinhua reported on Thursday evening.

The burden was away from 36 persons on Thursday night.

Whether those three victims were included in the burden of 48 was not immediately known.

Additional 30 people were hurt in the affair, according to Xinhua, but they were not seriously hurt.

Tractors digging through the wet hillside below the fell road were captured on video by state broadcaster Video.

Outside, a crane lifted charred, wrecked cars onto a fleet as people watched from behind a ring.

The road collapse was described by state media as a “natural geographical disaster” brought on by the “impact of continual large rain.”

According to CCTV on Thursday, President Xi Jinping directed officials to “go all-out in on-site save work and therapy of the wounded, and organize for the administration of risks and concealed dangers in a timely manner.”

Around 500 individuals have been dispatched to help with the recovery operation, it added.

According to Xinhua, the municipal government has “mobilized wealthy specialized forces and gone all out to have out… search and rescue.”

An official notice on Wednesday advised that part of the S12 bridge was closed in both directions, requiring excursions.
