JAKARTA: The death toll from a landslide near an illegal gold mine on Indonesia’s central island of Sulawesi had risen to 23 people, while 35 others are still missing, an official said on Tuesday ( Jul 9 ).
Unregulated mine are prevalent throughout the mineral-rich South Asian peninsula, where abandoned websites draw locals who search for left gold ore without proper safety gear.
Following heavy rains, a flood hit a remote town in the Bone Bolango region of Gorontalo province late on Saturday.
” As of this evening… 23 people died, 66 individuals survived and 35 people are being searched” for, Gorontalo search and rescue organization established Ida Bagus Nyoman Ngurah Asrama told AFP.
The past death burden was 11, as of Monday afternoon.
