Customs Dept seizes RM5mil worth of illicit cigarettes, alcohol and frozen meat

PETALING JAYA: The Customs Section has seized contraband cigarettes, alcoholic beverages plus frozen meat worth RM5mil with past due duties amounting to RM38. 58mil.

Custom Department Central Zone associate director general Mohammad Sabri Saad mentioned the items were seized around Port Klang and Seremban.

“On July 14 and 28 we managed to identify four suspicious storage containers at West Interface, Port Klang.

“We scanned the containers just before performing physical investigations on them and discovered illicit cigarettes within, ” he stated, adding that upon Aug 8, these people raided a lorry at a parking great deal at Taman Ideal Township in Negri Sembilan and discovered illicit cigarettes inside.

He said they grabbed over 42 mil cigarettes worth RM3. 36mil with RM28. 73mil in unpaid duties.

“Meanwhile, throughout Aug, we managed to cripple alcohol smuggling activities with the seizure of eight containers from West Port, Slot Klang.

“We detected the containers after our own scanners picked up dubious images of the items.

“Physical checks revealed 113, 698. 62 litres of contraband alcoholic beverages inside, ” this individual said, adding which the contraband was worth at least RM941, 265 with RM4. 85mil worth of unpaid duties.

In an unrelated case, Mohammad Sabri stated his personnel detected and seized a 40-foot container along Jalan Lengkungan Raja Lumut, Kawasan Perindustrian PKNS Pandamaran on Aug 17.

“We examined the container and found 27 tonnes of frozen beef lungs inside.

“No legitimate import documents had been produced during the time of the particular checks, ” this individual said, adding which the meat was worth at least RM696, five hundred.

This individual said these situations would be investigated under Section 135 of the Customs Act.

He urged the public to come forwards with information on smuggling activities.

“Identities of informants would be kept strictly confidential, ” he said.
