Cops ‘sorry’ for missing body in car

The Highway Police Division (HPD) provides expressed regret over an incident by which its officers had been accused of failing to notice an entire body trapped inside a destroyed car for twelve hours in Pattaya earlier this week.

The family associated with Phattharachai Atthaporn, 68, is suing the HPD and the rescuers for their part in the oversight.

Phattharachai was traveling along a motorway heading to Pattaya upon Aug 9 when his vehicle veered off the road and damaged. When police plus rescuers arrived plus approached the mangled wreckage they failed to notice whether Phattharachai was still within the vehicle.

It was towed to the police station using the victim still within and left generally there for 12 hrs before the police returned and discovered the body.

The HPD and the rescuers came under heavy fireplace for their alleged negligence, prompting the department to hold a combined press conference with the Highways Department to explain the matter yesterday.

HPD commander Pol Maj Style Ekkarat Limsangkan offered his regret within the incident and said a fact-finding screen has been set up jointly with the Highways Division to investigate the oversight.

He or she said officers initially did not see the car owner and thought he may already have been delivered to hospital. It was not really until investigators found no hospital experienced admitted Phattharachai they returned to the wrecked car and uncovered his body within. Phattharachai’s family pointed out earlier that if he had been taken to hospital promptly he might have got survived.

Dr Pakorn Wasinrat, from the Institute associated with Forensic Medicine, mentioned the man suffered serious injuries which may have got caused death a few minutes after the crash.
