Competitive job market pushing more Singapore undergraduates to pursue multiple internships

BUILD CONNECTIONS, SOCIAL Knowledge

Mr. Khandelwal added that in the face of difficult economic problems, individuals with solid jobs will also be able to stand out from other alumni, even those with work experience.

Additionally, he added, internships help students develop social skills and connections that may aid in the search for employment in the future.

” ( You will not ) always end up getting a job in the same company that you had interned with”, he added.

” But, if you continue to build that network and establish a rapport with those workers who you worked with during jobs, it’s possible that you will end up working for a comparable company, whether for a while or for a different one.”

For Mr. Teo, who claimed to be able to connect with older engineers from various departments, that was the case.

He said,” I think the open and creative environment in jobs has even helped me learn more from my coaches.”

However, a career coach from SMU cautioned that beyond internship experience, businesses even look for well-rounded people in the interviewing process.

According to Ms. Corrine Ong, director of occupation and employment services at SMU’s Dato ‘ Kho Hui Meng Career Centre, co-curricular and management activities help to develop soft skills, which employers look for.

” It’s very important that the kids really look at a holistic development of themselves through all the student life activities, and not just come for internships and as well as results,” she continued.

” If they were to appear at jobs, then quite significantly, ( they have to ) look at the value of the internships- not merely chasing the figures game”.
