Commentary: What a school principal wants parents to know about the leap from preschool to P1

We can build our son’s good habits to set them for college. Managing their digital devices, setting a night program, and making sure they get enough sleep will help them feel content and upbeat in school, which is beneficial for their learning.

We can teach our children how to package their school bags in accordance with the schedule and do it up. They will be able to find their teaching materials quickly in school, and they will experience less stressed.

We can even assist them to learn how to be focused on things in college by doing fun activities at home that require them to give attention and following directions, e. g., bread, card/board games and puzzles.

Tell your child that errors are acceptable and that they help us learn. Parents can play role in a few difficult situations, such as when your child forgets to bring the materials needed for class, and how to control their emotions.

HOW CAN Families SUPPORT THEIR CHILD MORE?

What we say and do as parents you form our children’s attitude towards understanding.

Instead of asking,” Did you get all your answers in the worksheet correct”?, try asking” What was something interesting you learnt today? What inquiries did you make? What concepts did you impart to the school”?

Set aside time for your child to read books in English and Mother Tongue or communicate with them using image books.

Help your child’s pursuit of their interests and any further exploration of those hobbies. If you do not know the answers to your child’s issues, say, “let’s study and find out up”. You and your child is research sites up, take field trips, or borrow books from the library to learn more.

To create a child’s optimistic attitude towards learning and problems, it is important to spend time developing their patience. Instead of rushing in too quickly when they struggle, you can challenge your child to try new things out beyond their comfort zone and offer support only when necessary.

It is also important to celebrate your child’s efforts, and not just their achievements. This will encourage your child to continue working on a task until it is finished, rather than giving up easily.
