Commentary: ‘Walking away from swimming is not failure’ – Joscelin Yeo on life beyond the pool

WALKING AWAY IS NOT FAILURE

My only option when I eventually accepted that the fire was over for the long haul was to leave.

Life was a meal, and it was time for me to explore different cuisines in the spread, me as a girl, a friend, a lover, a family, a partner, a staff, an entrepreneur, a business owner, a fun athlete, the list was huge.

The change turned out to be a trip of its own. Recognising that floating was everything I did, and no who I was, forced me to change my thinking. I had to let go of my own objectives and those of others.

Swimming did not define my career, I defined my career. Failure was never letting me stop swimming, but it was a failure for me to be true to myself. And being true to myself required the courage and strength to decide when to leave all I knew and to begin fresh.

Power does not arrive from a real capacity, but from an irrepressible will. Just because your appetite has changed, does n’t mean you’re not hungry anymore. It only means that you’re then eager for something different.

In move, there’s even language. Because I needed them to succeed once more, I had to learn how to interpret the life lessons that sport had given me into a novel setting. Instead of viewing move as a new identity that I had to create, I saw it as a chance to expand my as an athlete, grow a stronger network of help, and once more set myself the challenge of accomplishing things I never thought possible.
