PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIVES ARE BURRING
Is it possible to gain more control by establishing natural boundaries by using two distinct products, one for work and the other for private matters?
It is still work in progress to alter the expectations of leaders, parents, or other participants. Deep work or flow experts have also advised turning on the volume of notifications by turning on the” Do Not Disturb” modes on our phones and controlling the barrage of notifications. However, these also simply address part of the problem.
The different component of the issue is that we have combined our personal and professional lives into one tool. Our discussions smoothly alternate between what to prepare for dinner and the quarter’s sales goals, making it impossible to completely disconnect from both.
But that is only the start. Real restrictions are important. In our hyper-connected world, we have been conditioned to request validation from another. And for many experts, managers and executives, regular availability has been branded as a symbol of value or effectiveness.
About 89 per share of the time, we’re picking up our devices not because of a warning, but to see if there is one, according to a smaller 2021 investigation by the London School of Economics and Political Science. It’s as though we’re searching for options for confirmation.
This makes independent devices even more important, as a primary step towards the next, more hard, step of reprogramming psychological boundaries. Our supply can be compartmentalized so that we can gradually learn to accept the expectations of others and to be constantly available and ready for them.
