City readies up to 1,000 e-buses

More environmentally friendly buses are coming to the city and up to 1, 000 electrical buses will be on Bangkok’s streets right at the end of the year, mentioned government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana.

Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob gave guarantees to the cabinet regarding using more electrical buses in the funds on Monday right after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha stressed the need to promote the use of electric vehicles, said the spokesman.

Quoting Mr Saksayam, Mr Thanakorn mentioned about 1, 000 electric buses are expected to serve Bangkok commuters by the end of the year.

The fleet includes 90 operated simply by private firms within two-year contract to be signed with the Bangkok Mass Transit Specialist (BMTA).

These buses, that are expected to begin assistance in November, are part of the BMTA’s plan to hire private companies to operate 224 electrical buses in the city under a two-year agreement.

The short-term contract is needed to boost the bus agency’s capacity while its rehabilitation plan cannot be implemented. Currently, you can find 2, 885 BMTA-operated buses serving 107 routes.

In terms of service efficiency, the BMTA will increase frequency to nineteen, 000 trips each day, up from the present 17, 000, to support a rise in the quantity of passengers. Due to increasing fuel prices, the amount of city bus people has increased to 707, 000 per day through 600, 000.

Together with one more 750 new busses serving 77 brand new routes granted in order to private bus workers, frequency is expected to increase to twenty five, 000 trips each day serving up to 1 million passengers right at the end of this year.

Three-wheel tuk-tuks are also hoped to become replaced with electrical tuk-tuks.
