Chinese universities launch DeepSeek courses to capitalise on AI boom

Founded by Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, whose AI breakthrough has been hailed as a” Sputnik moment” for China and has attracted a lot of attention, universities across China have started artificial intelligence ( AI ) courses based on its findings.

The shift is in response to Chinese officials ‘ efforts to promote scientific and technological innovation in schools and universities, which could lead to new development for the second-largest economy in the world.

DeepSeek, a Hangzhou-based business, has been showered with compliment by Silicon Valley executives and US software company engineers equally, who say its models DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1 are on line with OpenAI and Meta’s most sophisticated models.

Shenzhen University in the southern Guangdong province announced this week that it would be launching an artificial intelligence program based on DeepSeek that may assist students in learning about important technologies as well as on stability, privacy, ethics, and other issues.

According to the university, the course will “explore how to strike a balance between ethical standards and scientific innovation.”

Eastern Chinese universities Zhejiang University announced that it would begin offering unique DeepSeek courses in February.

Jiao Tong University in Shanghai announced on its official Twitter account that DeepSeek has been used to enhance AI teaching tools for its courses. Renmin University of China asserted that it has even used DeepSeek in “multiple areas, injecting new authority for teaching and research, and school office.”

China released its first national action plan in January to create a” robust education state” by 2035, which stated that it wanted to establish a “high superior knowledge program” with access and quality “among the best in the world.”

Liang Wenfeng, chairman of DeepSeek, attended a unique meeting on Feb 17 with President Xi Jinping and some of the biggest brands in China’s tech industry, such as Alibaba.
