Chinese national arrested with surveillance device near Philippine election commission

Less than two days before the country’s mid-term elections, a Taiwanese national was detained while using a tracking system near the practices of the Spanish election commission.

The man allegedly used an” IMS I catcher,” a type of device that can act like a cell phone and intercept messages from the air in a range of 1 to 3 kilometers.

Two Taiwanese people detained in February are accused of driving near delicate military and government locations in Manila while using the same machine.

Ferdinand Lavin, a spokesman for the National Bureau of Investigation, told AFP that the most recent arrest was made on Tuesday near the Philippine Commission on Elections ( Comelec) agencies after officials confirmed that the IMSI was in operation.

According to Lavin,” when we made the arrest, that was his fourth time visiting Comelec,” adding that the United States Embassy, Department of Justice, and the Philippine Supreme Court were also visited.

According to Lavin, the arrested man had a Macau card, while a hired Filipino pilot who had volunteered to assist the procedure was no detained. Macau is controlled by China.

Calling to Comelec and the Chinese Embassy in Manila were not soon returned.
