China’s Shanghai to carry out a few COVID-19 testing, residents say

SHANGHAI: Regulators in at least 6 districts in Shanghai notified residents that they would be carrying out bulk PCR testing intended for COVID-19 on Tuesday (Jul 5), just over a month after the city’s lockdown was raised.

Inhabitants of Xuhui, Changning, Jingan, Baoshan, Minhang and Yangpu districts said they had obtained notices from their residential committees about the assessments. Some were also told they would end up being asked to take another test on Wednesday or Thursday.

The Shanghai govt did not immediately respond to a request for remark.

The home committees did not state in their notices why the testing was being organized and how extensive it had been.

The city documented eight new nearby COVID-19 cases on Monday, seven of which it said had been found in quarantined places.

The city currently requires all of the 16 districts to organise mass examining of residents each weekend until the finish of July. Residents also need to test themselves every three days in order to enter general public areas such as departmental stores or take general public transport.

Even though China’s most populous city has lifted a two month-long lockdown of its twenty five million residents, this still imposes targeted curbs on movements whenever a COVID-19 situation is found outside quarantined areas.

Town lockdowns and repetitive mass testing, component of China’s zero-COVID plan that aims in order to eradicate all outbreaks, have brought case numbers down most of the measures have got fuelled anger and taken a cost on the economy.
