China-Taiwan: As China broods, Taiwan is in a ‘Pelosi lovefest’

Taiwan needs Many support, military plus otherwise. But it craves legitimacy. It demands recognition that this is not really some “renegade province” as Beijing calls it, but the proud country, with its own democratic federal government and a determination to keep it that way.

That is why a visit by the loudspeaker of the US House of Representatives means so much. America is exactly what Taiwan looks up to, not China.

They have been studying from the colour of her outfits to the height of her pumps – very high to have an 82-year-old apparently : and the fact that the lady “looked like Audrey Hepburn in that picture of her with President John Farreneheit. Kennedy back in 1961”.

There is a full-on Pelosi lovefest happening in Taipei, the island’s capital.

Crowds gathered early outside Taiwan’s parliament on Wednesday, hoping to get a glimpse associated with Ms Pelosi as she came out. Almost everyone there brushed away from worries that Cina might retaliate.

“We are used to the threats from Tiongkok, ” a female bank told us. “In the long run this journey will be good for the introduction of US-Taiwan relations. ”

For Beijing, that should have been the final of the story. Yet America never completely gave up Taiwan. So that as this island provides transformed from a military dictatorship to a flourishing democracy, the feeling that the US should protect this “plucky little democracy” in the face of China’s threats provides only grown.

It is now increasingly clear that Beijing certainly will not be satisfied by venting its anger at Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan with mere words.

The announcement associated with six large exclusion zones around the island starting on Thursday night, and lasting designed for four days, is definitely ominous. The US Navy is usually watching all this extremely closely, and currently has the USS Ronald Reagan carrier fight group sailing nearby in the Philippine Ocean.

Ms Pelosi is now on her way to South Korea, but the fallout from this visit to Taiwan looks started rumble on for a while longer – and could even grow in to a major US-China crisis.
