China sees 27% surge in telecom and online fraud cases, new judiciary reports reveal

BEIJING: Chinese authorities handled some 40, 000 cases of telecoms and online fraud last month, a 26.7 per cent rise from 2023 as the land ramped up work to stamp out legal con businesses operating out of Myanmar.

Legal prosecution and judicial figures were released by the Supreme People’s Procuratorate ( SPP ), China’s top prosecutorial body, and the Supreme People’s Court ( SPC ) as part of the ongoing National People’s Congress ( NPC ) meetings in Beijing. &nbsp,

The SPC said the 40, 000 telecommunication fraud cases last month involved 82, 000 accused. &nbsp,

The SPP reported charging 78, 000 people with telecoms scams, marking a substantial increase of 53.9 per share from the year before. &nbsp,

The information come days after thousands of Chinese nationals freed from con centres in Myanmar, were flown apartment through Thailand as part of continued cross-border efforts to return workers.

The SPP report highlighted the case of 39 people of a Myanmar-based criminal syndicate known as” the Ming home”, who were prosecuted along with associated criminal groups by regulators in the northeast Zhejiang province. &nbsp,

The group was reportedly involved in gambling and fraud-related transactions exceeding 10 billion yuan ( US$ 1.37 billion ) that resulted in the deaths of 14 Chinese nationals and injuries to six others, according to state outlet CCTV News.

The initial trials for 23 accused began last quarter, according to local media reports.

China’s authorities furthermore strengthened sentence against those convicted of crimes disrupting social purchase. &nbsp,

In its statement, the SPC said 2024 see 49, 000 cases of serious aggressive crimes involving 58, 000 people, which also included homicide cases. This a 5.8 per cent lower as compared to the previous month.
