China, Philippines clash in South China Sea despite efforts to rebuild trust

China asserts autonomy over nearly all of the South China Sea, including places claimed by the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Brunei. To defend its says, Beijing has deployed an fleet of vessels.
