China natural disasters cost US$3.3 billion in first quarter, government says

BEIJING: Floods, droughts, an earthquake and freezing conditions in China caused direct economic losses of 23.76 billion yuan ( US$ 3.28 billion ) in the first quarter, the government said on Saturday ( Apr 13 ).

The incident management government cited damage caused by a number of cold magic, a 7.1 scale earthquake in the northwest of Xinjiang, floods in Yunnan province’s west, and flooding on the Yellow River.

10.4 million people were impacted by the disasters, according to the government in a record, while 110, 000 needed immediate transfer and resettlement.

Different natural disasters included a rainfall in the west affecting 424, 000 acres ( 10, 500 acres ) of vegetation, storms in the north and forest fires in the west and south.

Last year natural disasters in China caused 345.45 billion yuan ( US$ 47.7 billion ) of direct economic losses, with 691 people dead or missing, the ministry reported in January.

The government announced a three-year battle in January to address issues that slow down response to disasters and accidents, including production safety issues in industries like mining.
