China launches online crackdown on ‘harmful’ content targeting children

China announced new restrictions on internet content on Saturday ( Jul 13 ), criticizing video apps and social media platforms for purging child-appropriate content.

The local web is totally controlled by the ruling Communist Party, which censors offensive, offensive, or socially subversive content.

It has occasionally acted harshly against certain industries, ranging from gaming and online retailers to internet influencers.

In a speech on Saturday, the government’s web watchdog said it was launching a two-month” Clear and Bright” campaign” to properly develop the protection of minors on the internet and make a healthier, safer online environment”.

The maneuver did “rectify important problems” related to short-video and livestreaming platforms, social media sites, online purchasing programs, app stores, clever devices for children and virtual controls for minors, the declaration by the Cyberspace Administration of China said.

It targets various behaviors, including broadcasting videos that make fun of school bullying, including “violent and gruesome” language in old-fashioned children’s cartoons and songs, and making money off of young “internet celebrity kids.”
