BEIJING: China on Tuesday ( Apr 23 ) issued its highest-level red rainstorm warning for parts of Guangdong, a local weather agency said, as the southern province was battered by downpours.
According to the weather observatory, the megalopolis of Shenzhen was one of the places where “heavy to really heavy downpours” were reported, adding that the risk of flash floods was “very high.”
The great southwestern province of Guangdong has been slashed by heavy rains in recent days, enlarging rivers and causing fears of severe flooding, which state media claimed could only be” seen once a century.”
Since the storms started over the weekend, 110,000 Guangdong citizens have been relocated, according to state news agency Xinhua.
Four persons died and 10 were missing, Xinhua reported.
China is no stranger to severe weather, but it has recently experienced extreme flooding, devastating droughts, and record-breaking heat.
Extreme weather events are more frequent and intense because of human-emitted house chemicals, which are the biggest emitters in the world.
