Customer gearing up for army exercises in the oceans around Taiwan following top US politician Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island.
Ms Pelosi remaining on Wednesday following a brief but controversial visit to Taiwan, which China regards like a breakaway province.
In answer, China announced five days of “necessary and just” military drills, which will begin upon Thursday.
Taiwan stated 27 Chinese warplanes had already inserted its air defence zone.
On Wednesday, Taiwan’s defence ministry said it had scrambled jets to warn them off.
China has said the particular exercises will take place in certain of the world’s most frantic waterways and will include “long-range live ammo shooting”.
Taiwan has asked boats to find alternative ways to avoid the exercises and is negotiating along with neighbouring Japan and the Philippines to find option aviation routes.
President Tsai Ing-wen said the country had been facing “deliberately increased military threats”.
