China: Fire in Hebei nursing home kills 20 people

According to state media reports, twenty people have died in a blaze at a nursing home in northeast China.

On Tuesday evening, the fire in Chengde City, Hebei province, erupted and burned out in about two days.

According to reports, 19 individuals survived the fire and were taken to a hospital for observation.

A person in charge of the home has been detained, and regulators are looking into the cause of the incident. No additional information was soon made accessible.

Some users of social media pleaded for a thorough inspection, while others expressed love for the elderly patients.

One Weibo users wrote,” Old individuals already have freedom problems.” They must have been extremely hungry during the fire, I can’t imagine.

As China deals with a growing ageing population, nursing homes and old treatment services have doubled between 2019 and 2024, according to officials.

In 2023, 29 people died – many of them elderly – and dozens were injured after a private hospital in Beijing caught fire.
