China cracks down after dumpling-hunting cyclists spark road chaos

BEIJING: Chinese authorities have reacted to a trend that saw hundreds of cyclists scurry through a bridge at evening to gorge on dumplings in a nearby area.

According to state media, college kids sparked the trend by sharing an evening trip from Beijing to Kaifeng, which is about 80 kilometers aside, to enjoy some well-known local sauce dumplings.

Pictures of more recent rides show a multi-lane road connecting the two towns, some of whom straddle brightly colored shared scooters, dubbed the” Night Riding Great Army.”

Authorities initially embraced the enjoyable festivities, but eventually, after the large-scale gathering caused traffic chaos and security concerns, they placed traffic restrictions.

The road will be” closed to non-motorized vehicles” from 4pm to noon on Sunday, according to a statement from the provincial police online on Saturday ( November 9 ), “due to its occupation by shared bikes and other items at various points.”

The Kaifeng city government cited the possibility of users falling and getting hurt, or preventing other road users from getting medical attention in a individual speech.

” ( You ) have demonstrated the wilful whimsy of youth”, it said, “but… more and more people are starting to worry about the hidden dangers”.
