China and Japan expected to discuss seafood ban

Beijing: On Wednesday ( Dec. 25 ), Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwaya are scheduled to meet in Beijing to discuss China’s ban on Japanese seafood imports.

Iwaya’s one-day visit to the Taiwanese capital, on China’s proposal, is his first since assuming his part in October.

Despite Chinese criticism, Beijing lifted the ban last August when Tokyo began releasing radioactive treated liquid from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant.

When questioned about the restrictions at a standard media briefing on Tuesday, Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry, urged Japan to fulfill its obligations under an deal reached in September.

The agreement commits Japan to establishing a long-term global monitoring arrangement that will allow parties, including China, to perform independent sampling and monitoring.

” After effectively participating in long-term international tracking… China will begin to change related measures on the basis of clinical evidence, and gradually rebuild imports of Chinese underwater products that meet standards and regulations”, Mao said, without giving a timeline.

China continues to resist the water transfer, she added.
