Chennai knife attack: Stabbing of doctor in India renews safety fears

In the southwestern Indian city of Chennai, a physician was knifed, and the country’s concern for the safety of its health experts has risen.

Authorities say that Balaji Jaganathan, an doctor at a state hospital, was stabbed many times by a guy who was apparently displeased with his mother’s care.

According to reports, the doctor is in stable condition, and the intruder has been taken into custody.

According to a report released by the Indian Medical Association ( IMA ), more than 75 % of doctors in India have experienced at least one violent incident. 68.33 % of these incidents are caused by the patients ‘ attendees.

The case comes months after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor inside the hospital where she worked sparked nationwide protests – and a conversation about the unsafe working conditions of medical practitioners in India.

The attack took place on Wednesday, when Mr Jaganathan was treating the suspect’s mother, who was just diagnosed with an advanced stage of ovarian cancer.

According to reports, the man and the physician were seen fighting one day earlier. The next day, he entered Mr Jaganathan’s conversation area, locked it and apparently stabbed him seven days with a kitchen knife.

On his manner outside, he was intercepted by medical staff, and he was taken into police custody.

However, Mr Jaganathan, who suffered wounds to his forehead, mind, neck, back and hearing, was rushed into operation.

” His problem is secure. He may be monitored in ICU by a group of specialists”, the patient’s director, Dr L Parthasarathy, told investigators on Wednesday.

Numerous doctors organizations threatened a full service strike after the event sparked protests in Tamil Nadu state, where Chennai is located.

The country’s largest union of health professionals, the IMA, demanded strict measures to stop the violence against specialists.

” The assurance of doctors could only be restored by a complete overhaul of the hospital security environment. The society owes this to its specialists”, it said in a speech.

Opposition events in Tamil Nadu even criticized the government for failing to uphold the state’s laws and buy.

On Wednesday, assistant chief secretary Udayanidhi Stalin made a promise to take strict action against the assailant.
