In order to accommodate a rise in traffic associated with the start of the new school year, the Department of Rural Roads ( DRR ) yesterday officially opened the Maha Sawat Canal Bridge on Ratchaphruek Road in Nonthaburi.

On June 20, the outgoing side of the bridge will officially available, allowing for full-time operation and significantly reducing area congestion.

Phongkawin Jungrungreangkit, a transportation minister’s advisor, reported yesterday that the DRR’s bridge addresses serious congestion at a significant bottleneck on Ratchaphruek Road.

Up to 120, 000 cars travel through the area during peak hours each day. The fresh bridge is anticipated to increase traffic potential, reduce injuries, and improve travel performance, all of which will improve riders ‘ quality of life in the eastern Bangkok metropolitan region.

The Maha Sawat Canal Bridge links Bangkok’s Taling Chan city with Bang Kruai, Nonthaburi, via the Maha Sawat subdistrict. The project was started in 2022, which was earlier than the original date of June 2025.

The initiative, which is 9.9 kilometers long and costs 1.18 billion rmb, is said to be Montree Dechasakulsom, director-general of the DRR. It has contemporary drains and lighting systems, and is an 8 m-wide, two-lane metal gate with two lanes in each way. The outgoing part measures 1.9 kilometers, while the northbound side measures 2.1 kilometers.

Due to the rapid urbanization and land usage development along the Thonburi part of the Chao Phraya River in northern Nonthaburi, the need for the bridge developed.

The current infrastructure was unable to accommodate the growing number of vehicles, which caused numerous accidents and traffic delays.

Due to space constraints that prevented standard road development, the DRR created the gate to fit within the existing right-of-way.

The new framework aims to improve transport efficiency and make regular commuters travel safer, more quickly.
