BGF to help nail scammers

The Myanmar-allied Karen Border Guard Force ( BGF), led by Col. Saw Chit Thu, has pledged to work with the Thai government to combat call-center scam gangs in the area of the Thai border.

Col Saw Chit Thu stated in a statement to Thai Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai that the BGF would detain call swindlers and individual traffickers operating in Myanmar’s” controlled by it” regions.

As part of its efforts to stop crooks along the frontier, the BGF announced it will arrest more than 8, 000 people, mainly Chinese citizens, who work for call center gangs, up to their countries.

Pol Gen Thatchai Pitaneelaboot, chairman of the Royal Thai Police’s Anti-Human Smuggling Centre and Police Cyber Taskforce, said on Friday that Beijing had provided Thailand with a list of more than 3, 700 Chinese suspects involved in call-scam and trafficking groups in Myanmar.

Mr. Phumtham, who likewise serves as a deputy prime minister, acknowledged Col. Saw Chit Thu’s willingness to collaborate and stated on Friday that he had already seen the speech.

He claimed that the government’s top priority is to eradicate phone scammers that operate along the Thai-Myanmar frontier and return the victims.

The UK imposed sanctions against Col Saw Chit Thu in December 2023 over allegations of human trafficking, forced workers, and human rights violations, as did the EU, which even sanctioned Lt Col Mote Thone and Maj Tin Win.

According to Khit Thit Media, a news company in Myanmar, the BGF raided several areas in Shwe Kokko, reverse Mae Sot, that are suspected to be connected to human traffickers and con artists.

Those places include hotels, restaurants, and eateries, as the BGF pledged to send workers who were lured or forced by traffickers and scammers to work it back to their countries.
