Bangladesh protesters set state TV HQ ablaze as death toll mounts, internet cut

DHAKA: Bangladeshi students set fire to the country’s state broadcaster on Thursday &nbsp, ( Jul 18 ) &nbsp, as protests against civil service hiring rules escalated, with the death toll mounting to at least 32 and monitors saying a “near-total” internet blackout had been imposed.

Hunderte of protesters fought back and chased retreating officers to Bangladesh Television ( BTV ) headquarters in Dhaka as a result of police firing rubber bullets at them.

Demonstrators set the show’s welcome building on fire and dozens of other vehicles around, with the presenter claiming in a Facebook post that “many people” were trapped indoors, despite a station executive after telling AFP that they had safely evacuated the building.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made an appearance on the community the day before to avenge the uprisings in an effort to quiet the conflict.

” Our first requirement is that the prime minister has apologise to us”, rebel Bidisha Rimjhim, 18, told AFP.

” Second, justice may be ensured for our killed sons”, she added.
