Bangladesh police fire tear gas, rubber bullets at student protesters

For the second time in as many times, authorities in Dhaka tried unsuccessfully to prevent thousands of young protesters from obstructing roads around the conurbation.

A police barrier was destroyed by footage that was aired by regional broadcaster Jamuna Television, which featured some demonstrators mounting a police car and hundreds of others demolying it.

” WE WILL NOT LEAVE”

In an effort to stop hundreds of protesters from going on a major road in the port area of Chittagong, police arrested them with batons, according to witnesses.

” Officers tried to stop us from holding our rallies”, Dipa, a student from the town who did not give her last name, told AFP.

” We will not leave the road until our desire is satisfied.”

Students are arguing that only those restrictions that support ethnic minorities and the handicapped, which account for 6 % of work, should be used.

The quotas were briefly suspended by Bangladesh’s leading court on Wednesday, but protesters have vowed to continue until all of the parts of the plan are completely eliminated.

Critics claim that the program benefits the babies of pro-government organizations that support Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Hasina, 76, won her third straight standard election in January in a voting that saw a significant assault on her social rivals, who reportedly boycotted the poll.

Critics accuse Bangladeshi authorities of rubber-stamping choices made by her state.

Hasina has condemned the demonstrations, saying the issue had been settled by the judge.

” Kids are wasting their time”, she said Sunday.
