Traffic in parts of the capital city was heavily congested on Wednesday morning after steady rain from late Tuesday afternoon and into the night caused widespread flooding in Bangkok, Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi.
Many roads were inundated with the water reported to be over one metre deep in some areas.
In Bangkok, Bang Khen district was hardest hit with many cars stalled on the roads and obstructing the already heavy traffic. Phahon Yothin road was flooded all the way from Rangsit in Pathum Thani to Bang Khen circle.
Commuters who relied on buses and public vans to get to work were most affected. After wading through deep water to get to their stops they they had to wait for a long time before they could board their transport, and not knowing how long it would take to their destination.
Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipunt was in Bang Khen area during the night to see the situation first hand. He apologised to the people of Bangkok for the mess.
On the city-bound side of Ram Intra road from kilometre 8 to Bang Khen circle, Lak Si and Chaeng Wattana roads, cars moved very slowly because the water level was particularly high in front of Phra Nakhon Rajabhat University.
In Pathum Thani, some areas Rangsit area were nearly 2 metres underwater.
In Nonthaburi, traffic on Chaeng Wattana – Pak Kret road was heavy with some vehicles delayed for hours.
