After China threatened to impose the death penalty in extreme cases for “diehard” Taiwan independence separatists, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said on Monday ( Jun 24 ) that democracy is not a crime and that autocracy is the real “evil.”
China, which views Taiwan as its own country, has made no secret of its like of Lai, who took office last month, saying he is a” separatist”, and staged war activities immediately after his inauguration.
China increased its influence on Taiwan on Friday by issuing new constitutional rules punishing those who support the island’s proper independence, despite the fact that Taiwan’s democratically governed courts are not competent there.
Lai first expressed his concern for current flooding in southwestern China at a press conference held at the president’s office in Taipei before responding.
” I want to strain: Democracy is not a crime, it’s monarchy that is the real bad. China has no legal authority to punish Taiwan’s citizens simply for their beliefs. What’s more, China has not proper to go after Taiwan women’s rights across frontiers”, he said.
