Indonesia Elections 2024: Prabowo’s dual role as minister, presidential hopeful risks abuse of authority, analysts say

Researchers and activists are concerned about the constant hat-switching, according to CNA, which carries the risk of energy and state resources being misused for political purposes during an election cycle.

They argued that Indonesia may go back to the time when officials and other high-ranking public officers were barred from their jobs whenever they wanted to run for president.

IMPACTIVE CAMPAIGNING&nbsp,

For the first time, a secretary who is currently in office is permitted to run for leader without resigning.

However, Mr. Prabowo’s ability to battle widely is being hampered by his frequent hat-switching, according to an researcher, who claims that this prevents the presidential candidate from growing his fan base. &nbsp,

Previous administrators Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, who served terms ending in 2022 and 2023, respectively, are his competitors. As a result, they are free to run for office whenever and wherever they want. &nbsp,

Anies and Ganjar had been traveling to remote areas of the vast archipelago with more free time, occasionally running into voters in smaller cities and isolated villages. During their visit to a specific state, they were even able to fit more goals into their schedules and interact with their supporters more frequently.

Due to his ministerial responsibilities, Mr. Prabowo, on the other hand, was frequently unable to campaign outside of Jakarta or travel to locations that are more than a few hours ‘ drive from the capital city.

The national pioneer frequently travels to two or three regions in a single day, leaving very little time for interaction with his supporters whenever he does find time to travel to distant locations. &nbsp,

Due to his limited time, Mr. Prabowo frequently attends large demonstrations in hotel rooms and sports venues.

Indonesia Elections 2024: From contentious figure to crowd magnet, VP candidate Gibran expands Prabowo’s reach, appeal

Even though Mr. Gibran made an effort to shake hands with everyone, it was difficult to tell if he was enjoying the attention. When people yelled his name, he was generally silent with hardly a smile on his face. Additionally, Mr. Gibran disregarded requests for a brief interview from investigators following his campaign road that morning.

When other people were on phase, the vice presidential candidate generally kept to himself, silently watching as additional politicians seated around him were mingling and chatting with one another.

But when it was day for him to speak, Mr. Gibran went from being a reserved speaker to an animated orator.

” I appreciate you coming. Before introducing the card’s main programs, he said,” The citizens of Banyuwangi have been very kind,” to the cheers and loud applause of his adoring supporters.

When Mr. Gibran faced off against Muhaimin and Mahfud in a vice-presidential conversation on December 22, the same assurance was displayed. When his foes grilled or attacked him, Mr. Gibran was able to clearly convey the couple’s vision and delivered some counterpunches.

The discussion demonstrated that Mr. Gibran had much more to offer than just his junior and ties to the current president, according to Mdm Istifadah, who goes by a different name.

” I was awestruck. The 47-year-old treat vendor, who visited the vice-presidential candidate at the aerobics event, expressed her hope that he develops into a good leader who can accept everyone.

The Jakarta-based Center for Strategic and International Studies ‘ Mr. Arya Fernandes agreed. &nbsp,

” His efficiency at the vice presidential debate on December 22 exceeded everyone’s anticipations.” The social expert told CNA that he was quite impressive and demonstrated his familiarity with the most recent troubles.

However, the journalist claimed that convincing the public that he is “vice-presidential material” requires much more.

” He has been attempting to demonstrate that he is a deserving member and not just the son of the president.” But Mr. Arya said it’s difficult to get rid of this picture. &nbsp,

One thing that might not persuade people that Mr. Gibran is himself a notable chief is his ignorance and lack of political accomplishment.

Solo’s development was largely the result of his parents and F. X. Rudy. He said, referring to Fransiskus Xaverius Hadi Rudyatmo, Mr. Jokowi’s son as governor,” Gibran was just continuing what they have done.”

Snap Insight: Najib’s reduced jail term isn’t a full pardon, but his shadow still looms large in Malaysian politics

BOSSKU’S LASTING INFLUENCE

Najib’s age matters a lot here. If he does not receive any sentence reduction, he will be 81 years old when released in 2034. If Najib walks free in 2026, he will be 73 years old – not significantly older than the past four prime ministers when they assumed office.

However, the Pardons Board made no mention of the five-year ban from politics, as laid out in the constitution, that typically succeeds a prison sentence. Even if Najib is released on 2026, he has to wait till August 2031 before contesting in any election, guaranteeing him to miss at least one election cycle.

Of course, Najib’s influence is not only limited to elections. Returning in 2026 could already guarantee his place in UMNO, using his flagship “Bossku” (my boss) branding to reinvigorate his base.

The current UMNO president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, could now tell his party that he has fulfilled his promise of pursuing a pardon for Najib, and this is the fruit of his labour.

While this success could help him hold on to the presidency for a few years, the pressure for Najib to take over the reins will start to build. Mr Ahmad Zahid would have to make another political manoeuvre to keep Najib friendly but at bay.

FINAL APPEAL HEARING AT FEDERAL COURT

Jul 26, 2022: Najib’s new legal team for the SRC case was announced. It is headed by Mr Teh as counsel, with lawyers from Messrs Zaid Ibrahim Suflan TH Liew & Partners as co-counsels.

Jul 29, 2022: The Federal Court decided to proceed with the appeal as scheduled from Aug 15 despite a request from Najib’s new lawyers to have the hearing postponed on the ground that they needed more time to prepare for the case.

Aug 15, 2022: Mr Teh, the lead counsel, filed an application to adduce new evidence on the first day of the hearing for Najib’s final appeal at the Federal Court.

Aug 16, 2022: The Federal Court unanimously rejected Najib’s bid to introduce new evidence for his final appeal. The five-member judge led by Chief Justice Tengku Maimum Tuan Mat also rejected Najib’s legal team’s request for the case to be adjourned for three to four months.

Aug 18, 2022: The Federal Court began hearing Najib’s final appeal after rejecting the lead counsel’s request to discharge himself from the case. The court said that Mr Teh had failed to disclose adequate grounds to support his discharge application.

Aug 19, 2022: Najib discharges part of his legal team. The prosecution wrapped up their submissions, telling the court that the combined roles played by Najib enabled him to execute his plan of benefitting from SRC International funds.

“The SRC board of directors was rendered toothless and powerless by the most powerful man in the country,” the prosecutor said.

Aug 23, 2022: Najib failed in his bid to recuse Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat from presiding over his final appeal after an application was filed the night before. Citing a social media post by the Chief Justice’s husband in 2018, Mr Teh said it is clear that he had negative sentiments towards Najib’s leadership.

Hours later, the Federal Court upheld Najib’s guilty verdict and his 12-year jail sentence.

Sep 5, 2022: Parliament speaker Azhar Azizan Harun said that Najib will remain as a member of parliament as he has filed a petition seeking a royal pardon.

Sep 6, 2022: Najib applied for a review of the Federal Court’s decision. He asked to set aside the court’s decisions to dismiss his applications to recuse the Chief Justice and to include more information. The former prime minister also sought a stay of execution of his conviction and sentence pending the hearing of his review application.

BID TO REVIEW CONVICTION DISMISSED

Jan 19, 2023: Najib failed to recuse one of the sitting judges, Justice Abu Bakar Jais, a Court of Appeal judge, in his review application over his conviction in the SRC International case.

Mar 3, 2023: Najib was acquitted by the Malaysian court of charges related to the tampering of a 1MDB audit report. The charge focused on allegations that Najib ordered a report on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad sovereign wealth fund by the government’s official audit body to be altered in February 2016. His acquittal from the tampering charge did not affect his jail sentence.

Mar 31, 2023: Malaysia’s top court dismissed Najib’s bid to review his corruption conviction over the 1MDB case, ending Najib’s judicial efforts to challenge the guilty verdict. Federal Court Judge Vernon Ong said a five-member panel voted 4-1 to dismiss Najib’s application to review the conviction.
