China envisions computing power as a future utility

China will certainly build a national computing net that allows people to consume and spend on computing power upon demand but its street to success will be long and difficult.

Gao Wen, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering as well as the director at the Shenzhen-government-owned Peng Cheng Laboratory, stated in a forum on Aug 6 that China’s computing net would connect all major computing centers in the land to provide standardized providers – similar to a power grid where consumers buy electricity.

Zhang Yunming, vice minister of China’s Ministry of Sector and Information Technology (MIIT), said last 30 days that the scale of China’s computing power industry grew rapidly over the past five years, with an average annual growth rate greater than 30%, ranking the nation second in the world following the United States.
