Regulators in Sydney are looking into whether the explosives found in a convoy were intended for an racist attack.
The bombs could had caused a 40-metre-wide fire and” major damage”, authorities said on Wednesday, adding that the danger was contained.
According to investigators, a statement that displayed racist messages was discovered in the caravan.
Premier Chris Minns, of New South Wales, said,” This is the revelation of a possible mass casualty occasion.”
The wagon was discovered on January 19 in Dural, a district of north-west Sydney, according to New South Wales Police Deputy Commissioner David Hudson, who spoke at a press conference.
Following the leak of information to the media on Wednesday, details of the research were made public.
Mr. Hudson said there was” some evidence that the bombs might be used in some sort of racist attack,” but he wouldn’t be drawn to the potential target.
He said officials had “mitigated the danger as much as possible” but stressed:” I’m never saying it’s been eliminated. I’m saying it’s been reduced”.
” One of the reasons we’re talking today is that people should be wary of what they see and hear about racism in our society,” said one speaker.
The Australian Federal Police are the subject of an investigation that has been launched.
Premier Chris Minns described the incident as “terrorism”.
” This may strike terror into the area, particularly the Jewish neighborhood, and it must be met with the total assets of the state”.
It has not yet been designated a criminal occurrence, the top confirmed.
Following a string of recent racist attacks in Australia, the revelation comes as a result.
In December, worshippers were forced to flee as Melbourne’s Adass Israel synagogue was set on fire.
Earlier this month, a childcare centre in Sydney was set alight and sprayed with antisemitic graffiti.
