At least 60 killed in India bridge collapse

AHMEDABAD, India:   At least 60 individuals were killed when a people bridge over a river in the western Indian state of Gujarat collapsed, plunging numerous people into the drinking water, officials said.

Authorities mentioned more than 150 individuals were on the suspension link over the Machhu River in the town of Morbi at the time of the collapse.

TELEVISION footage showed a large number of people clinging on to the cables and twisted remains of the collapsed bridge since emergency teams fought to rescue all of them. Some clambered up the broken structure to try to make their way to the water banks, while others swam to safety.

“Sixty deaths have already been confirmed so far, inch member of parliament Mohan Kundariya said.

At least 30 individuals had also been hurt, other officials mentioned.

State House Minister Harsh Sanghavi said more than a hundred and fifty people were on the narrow cable-stayed bridge, the tourist attraction that will drew many sight-seers during the festive period, when Diwali plus Chhath Puja are celebrated.
