ASEAN nations to prioritise members’ rice needs: Report

KUALA LUMPUR: According to Bernama, the agrarian minister of Malaysia, Southeast Asian nations have decided to prioritize assisting one another in overcoming food scarcity and other issues.

According to Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu on Friday( Oct 6 ), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ( ASEAN) reached the agreement at a meeting this week in Kuala Lumpur.

According to him,” ASEAN cooperation means that if we encounter rice issues, ASEAN member states will give priority to asEAN governments first.”

According to Mohamad, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand have all stated that they will take into account any fresh import demands.

Top producers like India are restricting supplies in a number of nations, including Malaysia, which imports about 38 % of its wheat requirements. The government announced grants and other actions on Monday to balance rising rice prices and guarantee a sufficient supply in the market.

In order to stop consumers from stockpiling regional grains, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim issued a warning of legal action against someone found hoarding grain.
