Appeal of Vietnam death row tycoon to begin in separate case

Three decades after losing her charm against the death sentence in a separate event, a Taiwanese property tycoon was found guilty of money laundering.

Property designer Truong My Lan was found guilty of swindling income from Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB) in April of this year and given a US$ 27 billion fine.

Lan filed an appeal against that ruling, and the jury determined there was no justification for lowering her sentence but that she could also avoid receiving the death penalty if she returned three-quarters of the stolen goods.

She is now appealing the outcome of her appeal from a second test that ended her three-year prison sentence in October.

According to state-run news website VNExpress, the allure is scheduled to begin on Tuesday and run until April 21, and Lan may be represented by eight attorneys.

The 68-year-old was found innocent of unlawful cross-border prostitution of US$ 4.5 billion and laundering US$ 17.7 billion.

Additionally, she was found guilty of bribe-fraud, resulting in US$ 1.2 billion in relationship scams.

According to state media, 67 some will even file an appeal.

During her first test in April, Lan was found guilty of embezzling US$ 12.5 billion, but lawyers claimed that the scam’s full problems, which were US$ 27 billion, were equal to about 6 % of the nation’s GDP as of 2023, represented a share of the GDP.

Lan initially had only 5 % of SCB shares on paper, but the jury came to the conclusion that she successfully controlled more than 90 % through relatives, friends, and employees.

Tens of thousands of lender depositors lost income, shocking the socialist country and provoking sporadic protests from the patients.
