On the day of the Brics Foreign Ministers Meeting in Brazil, Thailand used the opportunity to advance negotiations over a free trade agreement between the EU and the Thai-Eurasian Economic Union ( EEU), according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
Minister Maris Sangiampongsa had been invited by his Portuguese rival, Mauro Vieira, to enter the Brics Partnership Session in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, according to Spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura, during a regular press briefing at the government.
The meeting, which is organized under the heading” The Role of the International South in Reinforcing Multilateralism,” is in line with Brazil’s wider Brics chair goal of” Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Equitable and Green Governance”.
To strengthen diplomatic relations with personal member states and to reiterate Thailand’s dedication to working closely with the Brics framework, Mr. Maris held a number of bilateral meetings.
He also had a meeting with Sergey Lavrov, the Soviet foreign secretary.
Those discussions centered on boosting Thailand and Russia’s diplomatic assistance in terms of tourism and social change.
According to Mr. Nikorndej, Thailand capitalized on this opportunity to advance the conversations for the Thailand-EEU FTA, which had been taken into account in earlier discussions.
Thailand reiterated its interest in boosting trade relations with the Eurasian Economic Union at the time of the conference with Minister Lavrov, according to the director.
Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia are all members of the EEU.
The bloc accounts for 3.2 % of global GDP, 2.2 % of global industrial output ( 2022 ), and 2.7 % of global exports ( 2021 ), according to the EEU’s official data.
Thailand viewed this as a proper opportunity to advance FTA conversations because Russia is a significant part of both Brics and the EEU, the spokesperson said.
