In the upcoming General Election, the People’s Action Party ( PAP ) will nominate lawyer Alex Yeo to replace Mr. Sitoh Yih Pin as its candidate for Potong Pasir SMC.
The announcement was made on Wednesday ( Apr 16 ), one week before Nomination Day, making a significant change for the ward with only one seat available.  ,
Mr. Sitoh, 60, is stepping down after three words that he has served in 2011. His victory that time put an end to the opposition’s 27-year dominance in the district. Chiam See Tong, a member of the Singapore People’s Party ( SPP ), left Potong Pasir that year to take the Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC.
Mr. Yeo, 46, has experience in both grassroots proposal and legitimate practice. He ran for office in the 2020 elections in Aljunied GRC. Prior to joining PAP’s Paya Lebar section, he served as the branch president.
Mr. Yeo thanked Mr. Sitoh for his earlier 25 years of service at the PAP Potong Pasir Branch function.  ,
He’s been a lovely leader to me privately, and he’s taught me a bit about community service and leadership, he said.  ,
Mr. Yeo continued that a portion of him has “never left” after helping Potong Pasir residents through his Pro Bono Lasting Power of Attonrey ( LPA ) program and the Community Legal Clinic he established in 2016.  ,
” Returning to Potong Pasir now feels like I’ve come home,” he said, “because the acquaintance with people, volunteers, and activists” makes it feel like I’ve come home.  ,
He claimed that Potong Pasir is now home to a large number of elderly, couples, and fresh and three-generation families.  ,
” I think the key for any group looking to provide Potong Pasir people well over the following five years may have a strong understanding of how to mix the rich heritage of the past with the dreams and aspirations of people in the future,” he said.  ,
With 50.36 percent of the vote, Mr. Sitoh clinched Potong Pasir in 2011 vying against Mrs. Lina Chiam of the Singapore People’s Party ( SPP ). In the 2020 battle against SPP’s Jose Raymond, he afterwards increased his winning percentage to 66.39 percent in 2015.
This year, Potong Pasir SMC will be contested by the SPP and the People’s Alliance for Reform ( PAR ).
In the most recent Electoral Boundaries Review Committee report, two counties from Potong Pasir SMC were moved to Marine Parade GRC. This adjustment was made in response to the rapid population rise brought on by recent advances in Bidadari. As of Feb 1, the district has 30, 897 registered voters, away from 19, 731 in 2020.
