GE2025: No target vote share in mind with fierce contest expected in coming election, says PM Wong

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on Saturday ( 12 ) that he does not have a target vote share in mind and that he is anticipating fierce competition across all wards as he prepares for his first general election as leader of the ruling party.

At a press conference announcing the People’s Action Party’s ( PAP ) Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC slate, he said,” I’m sure the candidates across Singapore, across every constituency, will have the same attitude and mindset.

Every seat can be fiercely contested, and “anything may occur in a campaign,” he added, adding that” there are no no safe seats” across the political map.

In the last two common votes, the opposition has contested every chair.

Mr. Wong acknowledged the Singapore Democratic Party’s intention to field a staff there and said even in his own district of Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC that he does not get the battle quietly.

He claimed that his team would still need to work hard to win the trust of the local inhabitants, which” we have built up over several years.”

” I don’t believe that just because I’m around as prime minister, it’s a sure win, or we will undoubtedly get above the national average, as some of you have questioned me about,” he said.

He continued, noting that he does not believe the PAP may win the forthcoming election either.

According to Mr. Wong,” I don’t come in with an expectation of a destination or a specific number in terms of what we might receive in vote shares for the party or the GRC.”

With 61.24 percent of the vote, the PAP won the previous general election, along from 69.9 percent in 2015.

” I expect the rest of my staff to do the same as I do as party chief and outlet for the GRC, and I will do my best,” said Mr. Wong.

” We will, at the end of the day, after doing our best, value the results of the primaries based on Singaporeans ‘ choices.”
