Myanmar junta chief to join regional summit in person

Myanmar’s Foreign Affairs Ministry announced that Min Aung Hlaing, the country’s leader, will go a regional summit of largely South Asian leaders on Friday in Bangkok. The country was devastated by an earthquake next week.

Since Min Aung Hlaing took control of a Southeast Asian nation in a revolution in 2021 that caused a civil war, this will be a comparatively rare visit. He is now in Myanmar, where the country’s worst-ever 7.7-magnitude disaster, which hit the nation on Friday, reached 2,886 on Wednesday, surpassing its previous record of 2,086 deaths.

Due to the Myanmar government’s failing to implement an agreed serenity strategy with the bloc, Min Aung Hlaing is the subject of northern sanctions and is prohibited from speaking at summits of the South Eastern bloc.

When asked if the Myanmar junta leader would like to attend the Bimstec conference in person, Thai Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Nikorndej Balankura said at a press conference on Wednesday.” He may join the meeting on the mountain day.

He continued,” I have not yet received his traveling schedule.”

Another Thai standard, who declined to be identified, confirmed to Reuters that Min Aung Hlaing may be present at the summit in person.

Min Aung Hlaing was previously informed that Thailand could go from anywhere. The secluded ruling standard Min Aung Hlaing has strengthened his position in Myanmar by opening diplomatic channels that were shut down for four years after his coup led an elected government that sparked a brutal civil war.

The Bay of Bengal program for multi-sectoral technical and economic assistance, or the conference of Bimstec, is scheduled to take place from April 2 to April 4.

Thailand, Myanmar, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan are included in the gathering.
