
A snorkeling boat carrying 13 people, including 11 Australian tourists, capsized in rough seas off Bali, Indonesia, on Friday ( Mar 21 ), killing a woman and injuring two others, according to police.
According to local police spokeswoman Agus Widiono, the Sea Dragon vessel was attempting to reach Nusa Penida, a well-known small island near Bali, when it was overtaken by great waves.
When a 39-year-old girl, identified by police as Anna Maree, was hit by a huge wave that caused the team to look at marine scenery when their vessel was hit. A second storm followed, which capsized the vessel in Kelingking lakes, according to Widiono.
Two nearby crew members and two wounded tourists were rescued from the rough waters by a local boat. The body of Maree was also discovered by volunteers, the director said.
The survivors are receiving treatment at a local health facility and are in a stable situation.
In recent years, hundreds of people have died in Indonesian sea injuries. Security restrictions are inadequately enforced, and boats frequently are overcrowded.
