Military officer seriously wounded in Yala ambush

Attack the latest in a series of aggressive instances in troubled southern counties

YALA: A military commander was seriously wounded in an invasion by an unknown number of armed people in front of a defense island in Bannang Sata region of this southern Thai border province on Tuesday night.

Lt Phuwiwat Khamsong, 41, of Nakhon Si Thammarat, was shot in the left side of the chest in front of the Jatae army outpost at Sanambin community Moo 1 in tambon Khuen Bang ling, said a policeman official at the Bannang Sata police station who was alerted at 9.45am.

The military commander was seriously wounded and rushed to Bannang Sata Hospital before being transferred to Yala Hospital, said authorities.

According to military at the island, an unknown amount of adversaries fired photos during an invasion of safety officers at the post. Some guns struck Lt Phuwiwat.

The firing follows a violent trip in which three people were killed and at least a few injured in separate episodes involving weapons and gunshots in Narathiwat and Pattani regions.

The problems were strange in that they occurred during Ramadan, the Muslim fasting quarter when militants in the area generally stay low. It was not apparent precisely who was responsible for the violence.

The happenings prompted Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai to call for a readjustment of the peace negotiations in the heavy South. &nbsp,

He said the problems had raised concerns about whether those involved in the speaks had full authority to represent rebel groups.
