Ms Chia said the necessary medical certificates from doctors will help give clear recognition of those who have a real need, and separate them from individuals who may abuse the PMAs.  ,
Reducing the equipment ‘ rate from 10km to 6km per minute – closer to walking speed – may also deter people without disabilities who might be tempted to employ PMAs, she added.  ,
” Hopefully, this regulation will help to limit the use of the device for people without medical needs”, she noted.  ,
Ms Chia said people usually have a misperception that the PMA is for pleasure. However, such products are health requirements for individuals who have flexibility damage. They can be used just on government pathways, including roads and cycling paths.
Individuals also have the wrong impression that PMAs will help keep them more engaged, she said.  ,
” The excessive use of PMAs did really result in physical deconditioning as individuals become less active. This is harmful to their wellbeing. But, we don’t promote the use of PMAs without real needs”, she said.
She added that people should stay effective through existing activities, including running, for as long as they are actually able to.  ,
Dr Chua said that with mobility products, people with mobility problems will be able to get near easier and live a more fulfilling career.  ,
” They’ll been able to spend more time outside their normal circle, they can go further to satisfy friends, spend their time more effectively, to have more effective living”, he said.  ,
The Transport Ministry said it will reveal more information on medical evaluation for PMAs in the second third of this year.
People who already have subsidised mobility scooters may become exempted from the examination. The government may even keep a record of those who already have the document.  ,
When the new laws kick in from next month, people will either have to present a physical or digital version of their license when approached by police officers.
