The Department of Special Investigation’s ( DSI) special cases board meeting today will decide whether to investigate alleged collusion in the last year’s Senate election. A source said yesterday that the Election Commission (EC ) will not attend.
The EC agreed to ignore the union’s request to attend a board meeting on Tuesday, rather sending a letter to the board claiming that the EC is the one with the authority to look into the case, according to the source.
The table, which is led by Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, was scheduled to make a choice on February 25, but was delayed so that it could be reviewed.
Mr. Phumtham said he would rather waited until the meeting actually occurs before saying anything about it. Monday, he declined to comment on the EC’s decision to not participate in today’s board meeting.
Mr. Phumtham responded to the club’s letter by saying he hadn’t seen the EC’s written response, and that he had finally left when asked for a comment on the EC’s claim that it has the power to move the election fraud investigation under Area 49 of the natural law.
A group of fruitless candidates, including some on the supply list, made the allegations that the Senate’s reported vote-fixing was the subject of a group of problems that the EC has been slow to act.
According to some, the allegations are directed at “blue union” senators, a group that is associated with the Bhumjaithai Party, a member of the government coalition.
Senator Chattrawat Saengphet, on the other hand, reversed on his earlier statement in legislature on Tuesday, saying the DSI board may face legal action if it consents to an investigation into the event. The senator claimed that this might be viewed as an attempt to overthrow political principles. He claimed yesterday that he had not accused anyone of everything bad since his comments on Tuesday had not yet taken place.
A committee vote against the president’s request for the DSI to handle the case, according to red-shirt head Jatuporn Prompan, meanwile, may indicate a power vacuum.
