MOE working with advertising industry on code of conduct to rein in ‘black sheep’ of tuition industry

Mr. Chan emphasized that parents may feel assured in making their own decisions regarding their children and refrain from feeling pressured. He cited a recent event in which principal institution personnel from a tuition center distributed flyers outside the classroom.

My primary went out and spoke with them,” I think we should have a piece of our brains.” It was entirely unnecessary”, he said, stressing that Primary 1 individuals do not have test. Instead of instilling the joy of learning, we are handing out flyers to families to frighten them of missing out.

Chairman of the Advertising Standards Authority of Singapore, Bryan Tan, confirmed that the specialist had met with MOE to talk about possible sector-specific rules for advertising self-regulation. &nbsp,

Beyond using ad-hoc advertising, Mr. Chan also criticised education facilities that carefully admit pupils to increase their success rates and claim credit for their academic accomplishments. &nbsp,

It is” the most immoral and degrades the entire picture of a tutor.” &nbsp,

Some education facilities even go as far as to discount students or their parents who use their services. Top Primary School Leaving Examination ( PSLE ) performers are tapped by others to promote their products.

” All these are superfluous, and it just adds to the guilt-tripping of the kids”, he said.

“( They ) say: ‘ If you consume this product, you will get top PSLE scores.’ Sorry, it’s the other way around. They got the top PSLE results, and you asked them to embrace your product”.

A code of conduct, which MOE is discussing with the marketing industry, do give guidelines for education center marketing, said Mr Chan. &nbsp,

The minister said there is” a very basic difference” between asking pupils whether they pay education on their own or under parental stress. &nbsp,

He said students who want to take further classes and study more are unaffected.

” But I’m always concerned for the students who come in for such training because they seem to be trying to fulfill someone else’s objectives rather than their own desires,” he said.
