Following a shooting at a mall in Selangor state on Saturday ( Feb. 8 ), security measures at shopping centers across Malaysia will be tightened. A minister has sincerized the public that national security and public order will continue to be top priorities for the government.
Following the incident at Setia City Mall, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain stated on Sunday that security personnel and supplementary police officers at national shops have been instructed to keep watch over the event.
The store, located in Setia Alam, is about a 40-minute pull out of Kuala Lumpur.  ,
Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail urged people to remain calm and asserted that the new incident had not caused any problem.  ,
” There is no need for ( the ) public ( to ) panic, as PDRM has demonstrated a high level of preparedness. He said on Monday, referring to the Malay acronym of the Royal Malaysia Police, that the police’s timely reaction reflects their ability, and any deficiencies in their abilities might have resulted in a different outcome.
Prior to this, Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan identified the suspect as a Malay gentleman in his 30s who had 11 prior convictions, including for drug-related offenses.  ,
According to Bernama, a preliminary research by the authorities revealed that the suspect had shot at a cleaner because he was upset that he had been told to change his belongings in the area.  ,
According to Razarudin, several police departments are also looking into the suspect’s whereabouts, with border and police in neighboring states also being advised to stay watch, according to Razarudin.  ,
Separately, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has urged the government to simply check with the police and the standard media for updates on the Setia City Mall killing event.  ,
He added that this was done to stop the dissemination of fabricated data that might raise common concern.  ,
” Do not spread details as if you were at the scene or conducting the investigation yourself… This leads to speculative and hypothecary. What bothers me the most is when like information or report is presented as if it were true,” Fahmi was quoted as saying on Sunday by Bernama news agency.  ,
Images and witness video taken from inside the store were widely circulated on Reddit and TikTok, and social media was abuzz with reports of the firing event.  ,
Authorities were the first to be called to the Setia City Mall event that was reported at 10.50pm on Saturday.
