OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and Kakao, South Korea’s market leader, announced on Tuesday ( Feb.4 ) that they intend to form a strategic partnership to create AI products for the Korean market.
Kakao added that it will use OpenAI systems in all of its products. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, and Chung Shina, the CEO of Kakao, made the announcement at a press event in Seoul.
Altman added that he wants to keep agreement conversations private because many Korean businesses may be significant contributors to the ecology of the US Stargate data center project.
On Tuesday, Altman met with SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won and will also meet with Samsung managers during his visit. High broadband memory cards used in AI computers are produced by SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics.
Next month, US President Donald Trump announced a private sector funding of up to US$ 500 billion to finance AI system, noting OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle were planning a cooperative venture called Stargate.
Asked whether OpenAI is looking at investing in and joining South Korea’s AI technology centre job, Altman said the US business is “actively considering” the walk.
The South Korean government announced last month that it would use funding from the public and private industries to build a regional AI processing center, which may generate up to US$ 1.4 billion in US investment.
In order to provide AI services to business clients, Altman and SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son agreed to form a cooperative venture in Japan on Monday.  ,
