2 suspects arrested for evading more than S$450,000 in duty and GST

SINGAPORE: Two people were arrested on Jan 23 after they were caught with 4, 228 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes, Singapore Customs said on Monday ( Feb 3 ). &nbsp,

The total duty and Goods and Services Tax ( GST ) evaded amounted to about S$ 457, 968 ( US$ 334, 431 ).

During the procedure at Petir Road in Bukit Panjang, two trucks were seized, as were a gentleman and a person, both Singaporeans, who were both 29 years old.

In a parked vehicle, according to Singapore Customs, 1, 252 boxes of duty-unpaid cigarettes were first discovered by its officials. &nbsp,

” Further inspection using a major found in the vehicle led officials to a second vehicle parked near, which contained another 2, 976 boxes of duty-unpaid smokes”, the agency added.

One of the trailers also contained drug paraphernalia, which was referred to the Central Narcotics Bureau for further research.

Studies revealed that the adult suspect was reportedly involved in the delivery of the duty-unpaid cigarettes. &nbsp,

Singapore Customs stated that” the case is still being heard against the man,” adding that the case is involving the female believe. &nbsp,

Under the Customs Act and the GST Act, it is an offence to buy, buy, present, offer, store, maintain, possess or deal with duty-unpaid products.

Those found guilty of these crimes could receive a sentence of up to six years in prison, a good away to 40 times the tax and GST exemption number, or both.

Cars engaged in in these crimes are also liable to remain forfeited, according to Singapore Customs.
