Ministry rule paves way for gender-agnostic marriages

The Ministry of Interior’s fresh rules on family subscription was announced in the Royal Gazette on Monday to coincide with the similar wedding bill that will take effect on Thursday.

The Ministry of Interior Regulation on Family Registration ( No. 4 ) BE 2568 ( 2025 ) will support same-gender families, including couples who are engaged or married, said Karom Polpornklang, a deputy government spokesman.

Under its fresh language, the term “man”, “woman”, “husband”, “wife”, and “husband and partner” have been replaced by “person”, “fiance”, “fiancee”, and” spouse”.

The new term will affect the functioning of the household registration and recording method of district headquarters of the Interior Ministry, Mr Karom said.

So the government has adjusted the system to support the fresh conditions, allowing same-sex people to record their relationship or even marriage in the future, he added.

The change may come into force from Thursday, the same day that the similar wedding expenses takes effect, the assistant federal official said.

The Department of Provincial Administration, as the main secretary, has prepared and rehearsed the operations with the subscription departments of 878 city offices, along with 50 city offices in Bangkok, 94 Thai embassies and consulates around the world to make sure that union registrations proceed easily from Thursday, Mr Karom said.

Bangkok Pride posted a statement on its Facebook site welcoming the new rules.

” This marks a 104-day worry since the Marriage Equality Law received imperial support on September 24, 2024,” it posted.

” The Ministry of Interior has today issued the important household registration requirements, powerful on Jan 23. From this day forward, everyone, regardless of their sex, may really be able to marry without legal limitations tied to sex. “
