Singapore will soon require app stores to implement safeguards for young people from inappropriate apps, according to the Infocomm Media Development Authority ( IMDA ) announcement made on Wednesday ( Jan 15 ).  ,
The Code of Practice for Online Safety for App Distribution Services, which was updated on March 31, will apply to this condition.  ,
Under the script, designated application stores with considerable approach or effect – Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Huawei App Gallery, Microsoft Store and Samsung Galaxy Store – will have to put in place” system-level measures” to limit the risk of exposure to harmful content for people, especially children.
This includes time confidence steps, which refer to methods to determine a person’s time.  ,
According to the password, types of hazardous material include:  ,
- Physical information
- Aggressive information
- Suicide and self-harm information
- Cyberbullying information
- Material endangering public wellness
- Material promoting organized violence and evil
In a brief, IMDA said institutions and officials worldwide, including Australia, the European Union, the UK and the US, are introducing actions to ensure , online solutions are age-appropriate and designed to kids.
It highlighted two years guarantee steps: Age assessment and time identification.
Age assessment relies on techniques or procedures to determine a user’s probable age or range. It does use artificial intelligence, machine learning systems or physical years analysis techniques.
To determine a user’s age or range, age verification relies on verified sources of identification, such as a digital ID or credit card.
IMDA said the designated app stores can decide the appropriate age assurance measure for their services – either age estimation, age verification, or both.
” IMDA will engage designated ( app stores ) over the next few months on the implementation of age assurance”, said the authority.
If an app store is unable to implement the age assurance measures by Mar 31 in accordance with IMDA, it is required to create a “reasonable” timeline for implementation along with details of how it intends to do so.
This is subject to agreement by IMDA, the authority added.  ,
For a start, they are expected to prevent children from accessing its highest age-rated apps, for example, those that are meant for users aged 18 and above.  ,
” IMDA will continue to work closely with the industry, taking into account industry and international practices and standards, to develop requirements and implementation,” said the authority.
