Pichai: Policy to help with living prices

According to Deputy Prime Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, the government is looking into energy costs in order to determine how to lower rates, as former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra suggested.

He told voters in Chiang Rai that the state may reduce the price of electricity to as low as 3.70 baht per unit in response to comments made by Thaksin, the de facto leader of the ruling Pheu Thai Party.

The estimated family light amount from this quarter until April is 4.15 baht per system, said Mr Pichai, even the finance minister, on Wednesday.

He claimed that the government is responsible for finding ways to lower energy prices to levels that are below 4 ringgit per product as part of its strategy to cover the high costs of people’s living expenses.

But, Mr. Pichai claimed that no further details on the matter were being taken into account, so he was unable to comment further.

He said that is still a mystery as to whether tax methods may be put in place to lower energy costs.

He claimed that the government’s support for lowering energy prices is not always sufficient.

There is also rumors that the Ministry of Finance may lower the price of gas in the Gulf of Thailand, which is used as power for electricity generation, to lower the cost, but Mr. Pichai claimed the government has not yet examined the specifics of such a tax estimate.

He said,” I can only ensure that the state has a plan to take care of the people because we want to lower the price of electricity below 4 baht.”

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra stated on Tuesday that lowering the price to 3.70 ringgit is probable, adding that it is a federal focus in response to Thaksin’s advice regarding the lower light price.
